From the Word of the Day

Along the bank of the river, fruit trees of every kind shall grow; their leaves shall not fade, nor their fruit fall.  Every month they shall bear fresh fruit, for they shall be watered by the flow from the sanctuary.  There fruit shall serve for food, and their leaves for medicine.

Ezekiel 47: 12

How should we live this Word

Ezekiel concludes his prophesying to the exiled Israelites in Babylon with a stupendous image of the messianic times.  There is a huge temple from which flow torrents of water that regenerate and fertilize all that is exposed to it.  It is the image of the presence of a God who loves life and all living things, vivifying and giving them abundant life.  There immediately comes to mind Jesus’ words, ‘I have come so that they may have life in abundance.’ 

Certainly this awesome biblical picture replaces the image of a spiritual life that languishes weakly and heavily in living the Lord’s Law.  Instead, His commandments ‘bring joy to the heart and light to the eyes ‘(Psalm 19).  Actually, heaviness and dragging along come from the fact that we think we are alone.  We forget that the sacraments, especially the Eucharist and Reconciliation, are rivers of healing water that revitalize our stagnant spiritual life.  A Christian who receives them frequently is like a tree irrigated by the water and blood that flow from the Savior’s pierced side.

Today as I pause for silent contemplation, I will visualize the flow of these limpid waters from on high down to the plain of my arid life.  There sin’s sickness is healed and health is re-invigorated, making me bear the fruit of good works.

Lord, thank You for this living water of the sacraments.  Grant that I may receive them with deep faith and that they may bring forth fruit of good humor, a peaceful smile, of help and consolation for my neighbor.

The voice of Origin, Church Doctor

Christ has submerged the universe in divine and sanctifying rivers.  He makes a torrent of living water come forth for the thirsty.  It flows from the wound that the lance opened in His side.  From the wound on Christ’s side, the Church came forth and He made her His Spouse.
