From the Word of the Day
Thus says the Lord: Lo, I am about to create new heavens and a new earth; the things of the past shall not be remembered or come to mind. Instead there shall always be rejoicing and happiness in what I create.
Isaiah 65: 17
How should we live this Word
The prophet Isaiah announces the splendor of a newness that involves heaven and earth, inundating it with joy. This passage is located in the liturgical time of Lent, which prepares us to celebrate and live the Paschal Mystery. It is the vital center of our believing, hoping and loving. The text clearly alludes to the greatest event in history. God loves us so much that, not only does He become human; He also takes upon Himself all our sins, our evil, our suffering. He does this through the most ignominious death on a cross and through His awesome victory over death, the resurrection.
Christianity would be only a consoling illusion based on practices of piety and on old whining about sin and death without this real newness. We need to change mentality without waiting for night. Sometimes it is precisely this sense of bright newness that is lacking. We become depressed by many things that are negative in ourselves and in others. This happens because we lack something fundamental, a continuous contact with Jesus who ‘dwells in us through faith’, as St. Paul says. We lose sight of Him in our life full stress and over activity. Thus, we often cry over the past. We lose sight of the fact that at the center of our person loved by God, there is the continually new source of His loving us first, independently of the rust that we carry on us and that He dissolves.
Today as I pause for silent contemplation, I will fix my eyes on Jesus, the infinite newness of love. He gives me a commandment that He Himself calls new, love each other as I have loved you.
Lord, make the eyes of my heart attentive to Your newness. Grant that I may lose whatever grime makes me incapable of loving. Help me to live Your precept of love.
The voice of David Maria Turoldo, mystic
The fullness of all is yet to happen. History is always an imperfect prophecy.
